Where to Play Golf in St. Louis

Schedule a Lesson or Program
When you are learning the game or trying to improve your existing game it's good to know what you are heading into when you book a tee time at a local course.  It's important to pick a course that fits your budget and your skill level, yet still provides enough of a challenge to help you further your game. If you are a beginner golfer you certainly don't want to beat yourself up trying to master a beast of a course.  If you are a more skilled player you don't want courses that are too simple, a poor layout or play slow.  Here's a list of local courses and what they have to offer your game:

Picture
 Aberdeen Golf Club
4111 Crescent Rd
Eureka, MO 63025
(636) 938-5465

Nestled down in a valley, Aberdeen is a true rendition of a Scottish Links style course.  With pot bunkers, rolling fairways, few trees and long native grasses, it just doesn't feel like golf in St. Louis.  Aberdeen is a good course for both beginners and skilled players.  The length allows long hitters the chance to hit many drivers off the tee, but yet the native grasses and tight fairways do provide a challenge.  For beginners and high handicappers and shorter hitters, the course is pretty much right in front of you.  The lack of trees and water (on most holes) allows you to learn the game without constantly losing and looking for balls.  For all players the big collars and lack of rough around the greens provides the option of either lofting the ball or playing a Scottish style bump and run.

Picture
 Pevely Farms Golf Club
400 Lewis Rd
Eureka, MO 63025
(636) 938-7000

Spread out among the rolling hills of the Meramec River Valley, Pevely Farms is one of the most scenic golf courses in the St. Louis metropolitan area.  It is a beautiful course that provides rolling hills, woods and water that comes into play on a few holes.  Pevely Farms is a challenge even for a skilled player as you will get several challenging lies and be required to work around doglegs, hitting into nestled greens.  For the beginner this course and some of it's tricky shots may be a bit of a challenge.  If you choose the right tees however, and know going in that without course knowledge you are at a bit of a disadvantage on your first go around, you will enjoy this scenic course.  With lots of hills and some long green to tee lengths, it's a tough course for walkers.

Picture
The Landings at Spirit Golf Club
180 N Eatherton Rd
Chesterfield, MO 63005
(636) 728-1927

Located in the Chesterfield Valley, the Landings at Spirit Golf Club is a links style course with double greens, big collars and challenging native grasses that line the course.  While you won't encounter many lakes or creeks, you will see doglegs, deep rough and the native grass in your way.  The Landings has maybe the best greens of all public courses in the St. Louis area.  Don't leave your ball above the pin as they typically roll 11-13 on the stimp meter.   This course provides a challenge even for skilled players especially off of the tee and around the greens, but there are 5 tee options and the front tees offer a nice short track for beginners and high handicapers.

Picture
 Crescent Farms Golf Club
745 Lewis Rd
Crescent, MO 63025
(636) 938-6202

Crescent Farms is located in Eureka in the Meramec River Valley.  It is a very natural tree lined course cut through the land.  You will encounter some water, some sand and lots of trees.  The Stallion course is their 18 hole track that provides a nice challenge for all skill levels.  One neat thing about Crescent Farms is it has an executive course called the Colt.  This is a great learning course for beginners and juniors.  Whether you want to sharpen your short game or just play a quick round that doesn't take hours, the Colt provides a nice challenge allowing you to hit a few drives while working mostly on your short irons. Crescent Farms is an easy course to walk.

 Annbriar Golf Course
1524 Birdie Ln
Waterloo, IL 62298
(618) 939-4653

Rated by Golf Digest as one of America's Top 500 courses, Annbriar is a favorite among St. Louisans.  It is a beautiful golf course very naturally built and cut through the rolling hills of Waterloo, IL.  For a scenic getaway and a good challenge, Annbriar is worth the drive if you live in the suburbs.  While it can provide a very good challenge to even highly skilled players, from the shorter tees it's not too tough.  It's one of those courses where you have a lot of landing room on the fairways and the greens, but if you miss them, you'll be working hard to save par.

Gateway National Golf Course
18 Golf Dr
Madison, IL 62060
(618) 482-4653

Gateway National Golf Course is a true links style course on the Illinois side of the river with scenic views of the arch.  It's bent grass fairways make it unique to public golf in the St. Louis area.  You'll see typical rolling mounds, tall grasses, fairways that run up to the greens and even stone bridges that you see in Scotland.  The course plays flat and long especially if the wind is blowing and there has been recent rain making it even more like golf in the British Isles.  While the short tees provide a nice experience for shorter hitters and beginners the course is really a nice challenge for skilled players and pros alike.

Picture
 Missouri Bluffs Golf Club
18 Research Park Circle
St Charles, MO 63304
(636) 939-6494

The Missouri Bluffs was designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio and it shows.  This course is beautiful and has many very amazing scenic views high on the bluffs.  This is a hilly course and not really one for walking unless you are in fine shape!  It provides a great shot making challenge for low handicappers as there are doglegs cut through trees and huge elevation changes.  For the higher handicap golfer, not being able to keep the ball in play can be very penalizing.  This is a great course to go out and work on uneven lies as you will have many uphill, downhill and sidehill challenges.

Ballwin Golf Course
333 Holloway Rd
Ballwin, MO 63011
(636) 227-1750

Located in the Western suburbs Ballwin is a course that although landlocked by houses and roads has been beautifully built and manicured.  They have white sand bunkers and rolling mounds that surround fairly large greens.  The course has many creeks that run through it and tree lined fairways to challenge your accuracy.  The course can play long enough from the tips for better players, but can play short from the front tees for short hitter or beginners to enjoy.  There is no driving range here for warm up, but there is a practice green. Ballwin is a good course for walkers.

 Quail Creek Golf Club
6022 Wells Rd
St Louis, MO 63128
(314) 487-1988

Located in South County, Quail Creek is a traditional layout that will challenge every skill level.  You will have to negotiate water, trees, hills and hazards to beat this track.  The course can play narrow at times so for those that spray the ball - beware!  The course can play long from the back tees (over 7000 yards) to very short from the front tees (under 4000 yards).  Naturally cut through the land, this course will provide a good test of your game no matter what your skill level.

 Highlands Golf & Tennis Center
5163 Clayton Ave
St Louis, MO 63110
(314) 531-7773

Located just 10 minutes from downtown the Highlands Golf Course is a fun little 9 hole course on the east end of  St. Louis's Forest Park.  This is a shorter course (2700 yards) and and just a par 34 so it's fun for a quick 9 or if you are a beginner or short hitter.  The rolling hills and trees provide for a variety of lies and challenges.  There are many scenic views on this fun little 9.

Forest Park - Norman K Probstein
6141 Lagoon Drive
St. Louis, MO 63112
(314) 367-1337

The Forest Park Course called the Norman K Probstein course has been called the "best city golf course in Mid-America."  The course started with one 9 built in 1912 and they quickly added 2 more 9s in the next couple of years.  Whether you are going out for 9 or 18 the course provides opportunities for a variety of shots through the hills and around hazards.  The best part about this golf course is it's scenic views of famous landmarks like the Art Museum, Washington University and the city of St. Louis.  You truly get the feel that you are playing golf in the big city.  The golf course is not too long (about 6200 from the tips) and is easily to walk.

Picture
 Creve Coeur Golf Course
11400 Olde Cabin Rd.
Creve Coeur, MO  63141
 (314) 432-1806

Creve Coeur Golf Course is a short, hilly course located conveniently in the suburbs at Ballas and Olive.  If you only have time for a quick 9 this is a great course to test your skills.  While it is a bit short and lacking sand, there are some hazards that come into play and some elevation changes to negotiate both on the fairways and on the greens.  For better players, the hills, hazards and small greens can test your shot making skills.  For beginners and short hitters this is a great course for you as it plays a bit on the short side. There is no driving range here for warm up, but there is a practice green.
